How to Dispose of Whiteware in Christchurch: The 2026 Guide

·7 min read

Old fridge in the garage or a washing machine that finally gave up? Here is what Christchurch homeowners actually pay to get rid of whiteware in 2026 - and when free EcoDrop drop-offs beat a paid pickup.

If you are clearing out a Christchurch home, kitchen, laundry or rental, whiteware is usually the trickiest piece of the puzzle. Fridges are heavy, washing machines leak, and council kerbside red bins will not touch them. The good news: Christchurch is actually one of the easier cities in New Zealand to dispose of whiteware properly, and a lot of it can be done for free if you have the time and a trailer.

This guide walks through the four realistic options in 2026, what each actually costs, and when paying for a pickup ends up cheaper than the DIY route.

What counts as whiteware in New Zealand?

In New Zealand the term whiteware usually covers large household appliances - fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens and ranges. Christchurch transfer stations and most recyclers treat all of these the same way: they are stripped for metal, and refrigerants are degassed where required.

  • Refrigerators and freezers (chest, upright, bar fridges)
  • Washing machines, dryers and washer/dryer combos
  • Dishwashers
  • Ovens, ranges, cooktops and rangehoods
  • Water heaters, heat pumps and dehumidifiers
  • Microwaves, small kitchen appliances (technically small whiteware/e-waste)

Option 1: Drop it at an EcoDrop transfer station (often free)

Christchurch is one of the few NZ centres where most whiteware can be dropped off for free, thanks to the EcoCentral-operated EcoDrop network. The metal is sent for recycling and the council subsidises the gate fee on whiteware. You just need a way to get it there.

EcoDrop locations and hours (2026)

  • EcoDrop Metro - 40 Metro Place, Bromley (off Dyers Road)
  • EcoDrop Parkhouse - 25 Parkhouse Road, Wigram
  • EcoDrop Styx Mill - 76 Styx Mill Road, Redwood (off Main North Road)
  • Open 7am to 4:30pm, seven days a week (closed Good Friday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day)

All metal whiteware, working or not, is generally accepted at no charge - fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, pots, pans and small metal appliances. Mixed loads with general rubbish on top of the whiteware will be weighed at the gate and charged normally, so it is worth separating the appliance from the rest of the load.

Option 2: Sell or donate it

If the appliance still works, you can usually move it on for free or even make a few dollars back. Christchurch has an active second-hand market through Trade Me, Facebook Marketplace and local community groups. Buyers will almost always collect, which solves the transport problem.

  • Trade Me Christchurch and Facebook Marketplace - free listings, fastest sell-through for fridges and front-loaders
  • Christchurch Buy Nothing groups and Neighbourly - free pickup arrangements
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStore and the Salvation Army Family Store - donations of working appliances in good condition

Set the price low if you want it gone before the weekend. Make sure it is clean inside (especially fridges and washing machines), disconnect water and power, and have a clear pickup window. If no one collects within 7-10 days, move on to the next option.

Option 3: Pay for a junk removal pickup

If you do not have a trailer, the appliance is upstairs or in a tight laundry, or you have other junk to get rid of at the same time, a paid removal service usually works out cheaper and faster than hiring a ute or taking time off work.

At General Junk, a single whiteware item starts from around $60, with multiple items typically falling into our quarter-truck ($160) or half-truck ($250) bands when bundled with other furniture or boxes. That includes the heavy lifting, the dolly work, navigating stairs, and the gate fees on anything that is not free at the EcoDrop.

Pickup is usually the right call when you are dealing with: a hoarder house cleanout, a rental property turnover, a deceased estate, or a kitchen renovation where the old fridge, oven and dishwasher all need to leave at once.

Option 4: Council kerbside special collection

Unlike Auckland, Christchurch City Council does not run a city-wide inorganic kerbside collection that picks up appliances. Whiteware is not allowed in the red, yellow or green wheelie bins. The only council route is dropping it at an EcoDrop yourself.

How much does it actually cost in 2026?

Here is a realistic comparison for getting one fridge and one washing machine out of a Christchurch home:

  • DIY trailer hire + EcoDrop drop-off: $50-90 trailer hire + $0 whiteware fee + your time and a friend with a strong back
  • Sell on Marketplace: -$50 to $150 in your pocket, but waiting time and tyre-kickers
  • Junk removal pickup: from about $60 for a single item, around $160-250 if you bundle other junk in the same trip
  • Skip bin: from $250-400 for a 2-3 cubic metre bin, then you still have to load it (and skip bins are inefficient for one or two appliances)

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a fridge or washing machine in my Christchurch red bin?+

No. Whiteware is too large and contains materials that are not accepted in any of the kerbside wheelie bins. It has to go to an EcoDrop or be picked up.

Do I need to degas the fridge before I drop it off?+

No. EcoCentral handles refrigerant recovery on-site at the EcoDrop transfer stations. You just need to make sure the appliance is empty and clean.

How quickly can General Junk pick up whiteware?+

Same-day or next-day pickup is often available, especially in central Christchurch suburbs like Riccarton, Papanui, Burnside and Mairehau. Larger jobs and Selwyn or Waimakariri pickups are usually booked within the week.

Is junk removal cheaper than a skip bin for whiteware?+

Almost always, yes - skip bins are designed for high-volume loose waste like renovation debris, not for one or two heavy appliances. For whiteware specifically, a single-item or quarter-truck pickup will usually beat the cheapest skip on price, and you skip the loading.
